Journalist, columnist and staunch defender of rationalism and logic Christopher Hitchens has died at age 62 after a long battle with cancer. His rigorous championing of facts in the face of religious fundamentalism and myriad detractors made him one of the world’s most eminent atheist voices.

As a columnist, Hitchens ruffled the feathers of the religious right. This made him one of the most hated men by COG members, who painted him as an example of an “angry, God-hating and unhappy atheist.”

The Guardian UK has a nice obituary on Hitchens’ life, legacy and impact.
